About Johanna & the Horsebox Art Gallery

Meet the Artist

Johanna Cooke creates joyful, expressive, and original artwork from her west of Ireland studio on the Wild Atlantic Way.

A nurse in A&E for over 20 years, Johanna believes in the power of art to brighten one’s day and offer a positive perspective on life.

Her approach to art is one without airs and graces, but rather creating accessible art that connects with people and shares her appreciation for the natural world.

With a degree in Fine Art, she embeds her knowledge and respect for art in her work and enjoys collaborating with other artists.

The vision of a mobile horsebox art gallery came to Johanna one day during a busy shift in A&E during the Covid pandemic. A few days later, Johanna and her husband Peter sourced a neglected horsebox and took on the project of bringing it back to life.

A lockdown project filled with fun, creativity, innovation and a true DIY spirit.

The Horsebox Art Gallery hit the road in the summer of 2022, and has been bringing joy and positive energy to towns, communities - and even national television! - ever since.
